Chess originated in 6th-century India as chaturanga, representing four military divisions, since then many rule changes have happened and it is now one of the most popular games in the world. In the beginning chess started out small in India and Persia but soon spread throughout Asia and Europe.
Chess started in the early 6th century in a small part of India known as. Back then it was known as Chaturanga meaning 4 divisions. It included a infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots, plus a king and advisor (who would later be the queen)
Next we travel to 7 century Persia where we pick up the start of many chess terms such as Shah Mat which means King is Helpless which will ultimately lead to the term Check Mate
In the 8th century Chess migrated to Spain and Italy known as Shatranj this is where chess begins to expand.
As chess moved through out Europe many rules changed they changed the names of pieces to fit there courts (Bishop, King, Queen, Knight) and by the late 15th century the queen was the most powerful and the game was near modern.
